Picking the right page
The freight you can bid on is decided by your truck before it is decided by anything else, before your lanes, your rate, or how long you have been running. Each page below covers one truck type: what it legally carries, what licences and endorsements it needs, what freight actually moves in it, and what is open on the board for it right now.
If you are choosing equipment rather than looking for freight, the three questions worth settling first are these. How much capital do you have, a cargo van and a Class 8 tractor are separated by two orders of magnitude. What licence class do you hold, or are you willing to obtain, the CDL threshold at 26,001 lb gross combination weight rating decides half of the list. And how much of your working day are you willing to spend physically handling freight, because that is the real difference between a dry van and a flatbed at similar rates per mile.
No CDL required
Cargo van, sprinter van, box truck and non-CDL hotshot setups all sit under the 26,001 lb line. The entry cost is the lowest in freight and the freight is real, but payload is the binding constraint on all four, read the weight on a load before you read its dimensions.
Enclosed trailer
Dry van is the largest pool of freight in the country and the most competitive to sell into. Reefer pays more and asks more: temperature records, pre-cooling, washouts, and a claims exposure on perishable freight that dry van does not have. Power only removes the trailer from the business entirely and replaces it with a trailer interchange agreement worth reading carefully.
Open deck
Flatbed rates run above dry van and the difference is paid for in securement, tarping and weather. Step deck buys back about eighteen inches of load height and with it the machinery freight a flatbed cannot clear. Lowboy is heavy haul, where permits and routing are the job rather than an afterthought.
Specialised
Car hauling turns on insurance limits and a condition report photographed at both ends. Tanker work needs the N endorsement, often the hazmat endorsement as well, and a driving technique that truckload experience does not transfer to.
